CLEMSON, SC -January 26, 2011 – Clemson University trustees heard “good news” about admissions and the school’s capital campaign fundraising effort at their quarterly meeting in Columbia Wednesday.

Provost Dori Helms said undergraduate student applications are up 2 percent and graduate student applications are up 3 percent. Additionally, applications from transfer students increased 7 percent.

Trustee Smyth McKissick, who chairs The Will To Lead: A Campaign for Clemson, updated the board on the capital campaign’s goal to raise $600 million for faculty, student and facility support.

“Since we announced our public campaign initiative on Aug. 26, 2010, at $433 million, we have raised over $29 million for Clemson,” he said. That brings the total as of Dec. 31 to $462.9 million.

“There’s no doubt that the news today is good but we have a lot of work to do,” McKissick said.

In action, the trustees gave concept approval to refurbishment of Clemson Engineering Technology Laboratory at the Advanced Materials Research Center in Anderson County and a new indoor practice facility for football on campus.

They also approved naming requests for The Clemson University Museum of Natural Sciences, a comprehensive “umbrella” museum of various natural science collections housed on campus, and the new academic facility under construction in the expansion of Lee Hall.

In his report, President James F. Barker briefed the trustees on meetings the new state governor has had with education leaders and her intent to establish clear communication.
