Clemson University Foundation announces new board members, re-elects officers

CLEMSON, SC – June 28, 2011 – Seven new members have been elected to the Clemson University Foundation board of directors. The board also re-elected its chairwoman and vice chairman.

Jane S. Sosebee of Clemson was re-elected chairwoman and G. Graham Goz Segars Jr. of Hartsville was re-elected vice chairman.

Sosebee is director of government relations for AT&T in South Carolina and has more than 30 years experience in the telecommunications industry. She is a 1978 Clemson graduate with a degree in English. She is former chairwoman of the Upstate Alliance, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and Innovate Anderson. She and her husband, Greg, have two daughters.

Segars is president and owner of Segars Development. He is a 1966 Clemson graduate with a degree in agronomy. He is chairman of the Coker College board of trustees, a former board member of the Florence Darlington Technical College Educational Foundation and chairman of the Heritage Community Bank board. He served on the Clemson University Board of Visitors prior to joining the foundation board in 2006. He and his wife, Pat, have five children.

New members also were elected to the board:

Susie C. Adams is a 1983 Clemson graduate with a degree in administrative management and a master’s degree in speech communication from the University of Georgia. She is vice president of marketing and customer experience for Duke Energy. She leads the group responsible for understanding Duke Energy’s customers, developing approaches to reach them and providing products and services, including energy efficiency, that benefit the customers and the company. Her involvement with Clemson University includes the Pearce Center Advisory Council and Corporate Task Force. She lives in Charlotte, N.C.

James H. Barnes
is a 1981 Clemson graduate with a degree in microbiology. He also received a degree from The College for Financial Planning in July 1989. He is a franchise owner of Ameriprise Financial Advisors and manages more than $90 million in client assets. His responsibilities include creating proper asset allocation design, security analysis and ongoing portfolio management. He is a member of The College of Financial Planning Board of Standards and has been a registered principal and compliance officer of Ameriprise Financial. His involvement with Clemson includes the Alumni Council Advisory Board, Greenville Clemson Club, current member and past president of the Greenville Clemson Luncheon Club and as a Greenville County Legislative Advocate. He lives in Greenville with his wife, Lou, and their three children.

Robert B. Hambright is a 1970 Clemson graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA from Winthrop University (1974). He is retired chief executive officer of the Southeast division of Balfour Beatty Construction Co. In September 2010, he and his wife, Susan, established the Robert B. and Susan B. Hambright Annual Leadership Program in Engineering. He is on the boards of the Winthrop University Foundation and Charlotte Center City Partners, as well as the foundation boards at Appalachian State University and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Hambrights have three children and live in Blowing Rock, N.C.

R. Glenn Hilliard
is a 1965 Clemson graduate with a degree in English and a Juris Doctor from George Washington University in 1968. He was chairman and chief executive officer of Hilliard Group LLC, an investment and consulting firm, since 2003. He is former chairman of the board of directors of CNO Financial Group Inc. and ING Americas. He is a director of Columbia Funds Series Trust and chairman of Banc of America Funds Trust. He and his wife, Heather, established the R. Glenn Hilliard Family Endowment in 2008. His involvement with Clemson includes being past chairman of the Clemson University Foundation board and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. The Hilliard’s have three children, five grandchildren and live in Atlanta.

Stephen Hutchinson is a 1968 graduate with a degree in economics. He is president and principal of The Hutchinson Co., a full-service real estate firm that provides brokerage and development services on the East Coast, concentrating mainly with retail companies. Hutchinson is the past president of East Coast Development Co. Inc. He is a member of the President’s Advisory Council. He lives in Charleston and has two daughters and four grandchildren.

Cheri Marie Phyfer is a Clemson graduate with a degree in management in 1993 and an MBA in 1999. She is division president and general manager of the Southeast division of Paint Stores Group of the Sherwin-Williams. She is a founding member of the Professional Women in Painting and was named to Top 40, Under 40 leaders in business in 2009 by the Dallas Business Journal. Phyfer also was listed as one of the Ten Most Influential Women in Texas in 2009 by Texas Diversity Magazine. She has served with the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Contractor Association and the University of Texas Dallas School of Management Advisory Council. Her Clemson involvement includes her present membership on the College of Business and Behavioral Science Executive Advisory Board, the Campaign Committee and the Alumni Association. She is married to Ben and they have two children. They live in Atlanta.

Ken Smith is a 1981 Clemson graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering. He completed the Executive International Program from Thunderbird International Business School in 1991 and the Executive Management Program at the University of Michigan in 2000. He is senior vice president for the Government Group of Fluor Corp. in Greenville. He helped facilitate the creation of the Fluor Corporation Endowed Chair of Supply Chain and Logistics. He is secretary of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation board of directors. He is past chairman of the Clemson University College of Engineering and Science Advisory Board and was a Clemson University Distinguished Service Alumni recipient in 2009. In 2009, he and his wife, Layne, established a scholarship endowment to assist students in the College of Engineering and Science. They reside in Greer and have three daughters with Clemson ties: Kelly (2008), Haley (2011) and Cameron 2013).

The Clemson University Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) entity organized solely to promote the welfare and future development of Clemson University.  It was chartered in 1933 to support the university’s educational and scientific goals.  It is the responsibility of the board of directors to manage and disburse assets prudently within a policy that encourages the enhancement of the resources of the Foundation.
