Clemson University to host German ambassador during international week

March 23, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – March 23, 2011 – German Days are coming to the Clemson University campus with a series of events highlighted by a visit by the ambassador of Germany to the United States.

Beginning March 29 with a performance by the Calmus Vocal Ensemble from Leipzig, the events will showcase the range of German programs at Clemson and celebrate the university’s international relationships.

Clemson University President James F. Barker will host Ambassador Klaus Scharioth April 4 and 5.

The ambassador will participate in a discussion on German business opportunities with Clemson and South Carolina, and address the university on transatlantic relations, which will include a question-and-answer session.

The ambassador’s remarks and public reception will take place from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. April 4 in the Self Auditorium at the Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

He also will attend a public reception and meet with faculty and students from Clemson’s German programs, state school officials and German language high school teachers and principals.

On April 5, the ambassador will visit Clemson’s Advanced Materials Research Center in Anderson and tour the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research, where he will address the International Conference on Sustainable Automotive Technologies (ICSAT).

More than 100 auto industry representatives from around the world will attend ICSAT 2011 to discuss new technologies and approaches in sustainable mobility.

Clemson is hosting the conference with the Institute for Technology and Design in Ingolstadt, Germany, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. ICSAT 2011 marks the first time the conference has taken place in North America.

The German connection is strengthened at the conference by a keynote address by Josef Kerscher, president of BMW Manufacturing, discussions on BMW Group’s approach to sustainable mobility and a guest lecture on the evolution of vehicle technologies by Frank Weith, technical strategy manager for Volkswagen Group.

German Days will coincide with International Awareness Week, a campuswide celebration of cultures held each spring. Student groups, academic departments and the community are involved in events that take place throughout the week, culminating in a large international festival. Events feature international photographs, music, dance, food and speakers for an interactive learning experience.

International Awareness Week is April 3-10. Click here for more information.
