Create IT Computer Camp Teaches High-School Students About Careers in Technology

COLUMBIA, SC – February 10, 2009 – More than two dozen Midlands high-school students who want to develop new computer skills, learn about careers in information technology and … take home a free laptop computer will get that opportunity when they participate in the Create IT Computer Camp Feb. 7 – 21 at the University of South Carolina.
The camp will be held on three consecutive Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Twenty students, chosen from a pool of 100 applicants, represent every high school in the Midlands and one each from Colleton and Orangeburg counties.
As requirements, each student wrote an essay on the career importance of information technology, submitted a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor and took a short quiz on information technology.
“We’ll have students get together with our students and faculty members and learn more about the University of South Carolina,” said Bob Brookshire, chairman of the department of technology support and training management. “They’ll learn more about computer technology as a career and find out about all the opportunities we have to study information technology at the university.”
The College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management’s department of Technology Support and Training Management (TSTM) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) will sponsor the free technology camp to encourage promising students to consider information technology as a possible field of study and/or career. Students learn computer architecture, application development and large-scale computing while building their own laptop computers.
Lonnie Emard, director of Staff Resource Management for BCBSSC, said, “High-tech companies like ours want to make young people aware of the career opportunities that exist in information technology. We anticipate an increasing demand for IT professionals in the coming years as current employees retire and business continues to grow.”
