Debris Removal in Laurens County Set to Begin Week of October 14, 2024, as SCDOT Continues Recovery Efforts
October 7, 2024The South Carolina Department of Transportation continues to clear trees, reopen roadways and assist utility crews with their operations. As that wraps up, our attention turns to cleaning storm debris from the roadside.
Debris crews have already begun preparing to mobilize. Those crews will first focus their attention to interstate and primary routes. As crews progress, they will then turn their attention to secondary and state-maintained neighborhood roads.
In the 16 counties with the most impacts from the storm, SCDOT has hired contractors to perform this work while maintenance crews in those counties remain focused on operations and restoring roads that were damaged in the storm. In other impacted areas, SCDOT maintenance crews will handle debris removal, and in many of those areas, these efforts are already underway.
The 16 counties with contract debris removal in place are Abbeville, Aiken, Anderson, Barnwell, Cherokee, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, Saluda, Spartanburg, and Union. Contract pickup in these 16 counties will begin the week of October 14, 2024 to allow community members recovering from the storm time to clean up and pile debris from their property at the roadside.
SCDOT asks the public to begin piling debris on the side of the road, safely out of the roadway. This will allow crews to expedite the cleanup process. See the graphic below.
SCDOT asks that if you encounter our crews or other first responders, slow down and give them room to work. Pay attention to signs and barricades and never move or drive around them.
