Equal Pay for Equal Work

February 24, 2016

Two top employment scholars in law and human resources from the University of South Carolina discuss the impact that President Obama’s executive action to ensure equal pay for women will have on businesses and employees.

Issued on January 29, 2016, the action will require companies with 100 employees to report employee salary information to federal government to ensure gender equality in pay.

Joseph Seiner, an employment law professor, and Patrick Wright, a human resources professor, discuss 1) how the law will help detect pay discrimination and increase the reporting burden on companies, 2) how some data may suggest pay inequity when inequity is due to legitimate job/career factors and 3) the expected rise in legal cases brought by the EEOC and others and the expense of litigation to prove innocence (when innocent) and encourage companies to settle rather than incur expenses fighting.
