After decades away from the diamond, the Joanna Hornets are back and continuing to build momentum in their inaugural season as a collegiate summer league team. This week, the Hornets face four games as part of their Southern Shores Collegiate Baseball League schedule, with matchups slated for Tuesday, Thursday, and a Sunday doubleheader.

The action begins Tuesday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m. when the Hornets take on Klutch Collegiate at Verdery Field. On Thursday, June 19, the team travels to Northwest Guilford to face the Greensboro Ducks, also at 7:00 p.m. The week concludes on Sunday, June 22, with a doubleheader against the Tar Heel Kings at Newberry High School. The first game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., followed by game two at 6:00 p.m.

The return of the Joanna Hornets marks the revival of a rich baseball legacy dating back to 1915, when the team was first formed as part of the area’s historic textile league. This season is the first for the Hornets in more than 70 years, reintroduced under the Southern Shores Collegiate Baseball League. The league features players from NCAA Divisions I through III, as well as NAIA and NJCAA schools, offering high-level summer play across the Carolinas and Georgia.

While the team’s permanent home will eventually be the renovated Joanna Ballpark—a project currently underway through the efforts of The Joanna Project—the Hornets are hosting their 2025 home games at Newberry High School.

Coached by Lindsey Stribble, who also serves as head baseball coach at Mid-Carolina High School, the Hornets have shown early promise despite a tough start. With a full week of games ahead, the Hornets will be looking to notch their first win and build team chemistry as the season progresses.
