Ferrell Recognized as Finalist for Governor's Professor of the Year

GREENVILLE, SC – March 5, 2012 – Kathy Ferrell of Greenville Technical College was recognized on Thursday, March 1 as a finalist for Governor¹s Professor of the Year. The state’s Higher Education Foundation hosted a luncheon at University of SouthCarolina honoring professors nominated for the awards and the state¹s two winners.

Dr. Hendrikus E. van Buick of USC Sumter and Dr. Conway F. Saylor of The Citadel were named winners for 2012. They were chosen from 35 candidates nominated by two-year and four-year colleges. Honorees exemplify excellence in teaching and student advising.

Ferrell, as Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Science, has taught at Greenville Tech since 2001. She earned a bachelor¹s degree and a master¹s degree in biological sciences from Converse College.

As a faculty advisor for the Greenville Tech Recycling and Sustainability Coalition, Ferrell works with students, faculty, and staff to establish and promote resource reduction programs through education and hands-on events.

Ferrell has been instrumental in the coalition¹s participation inRecycleMania, a nationwide competition among colleges and universities that helps promote waste reduction activities. Other efforts have included organization of EarthFest, an event that draws vendors demonstrating practices, products, and programs for ecological responsibility. She also organizes the annual Reedy River Clean Up on Greenville Tech¹s Barton
Campus, an effort that leads to collection of trash from the body of water, which runs through campus. In addition, Ferrell is working to help create an outdoor learning lab on the college¹s campus, an effort that includes restoring the health of the river and creating a space for sustainable curriculum enrichment for all courses.

Ferrell and Dr. Lee Edwards, also a biological sciences instructor, received an award for Innovation of the Year in 2011 from the League for Innovation in the Community College for their efforts to establish the outdoor lab.
