Fluor Foundation scholarships help Quick Jobs students

October 16, 2019

The Fluor Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the Greenville Tech Foundation to be used as scholarship assistance for students participating in the Quick Jobs with a Future program. The Quick Jobs program at Greenville Technical College provides intensive, job specific training that prepares a student for entry into career fields with current openings in the Greenville market. Students are able to enter their new careers after three weeks to six months of training. In 18 years of existence, Quick Jobs has helped many people establish or change careers, with 40,000 registrations.

Kim Jamison is a recent recipient of a Fluor-funded scholarship. Going through a divorce several years ago, she realized that she needed a job that would provide a comfortable salary with a family-friendly schedule. Her background in the beauty industry and experience in outside sales weren’t the concrete credentials that employers were seeking, so she enrolled in the Quick Jobs Ophthalmic Assistant program. Kim found the answer to her career goals with a position at Dr. McGregor and Associates where she works directly with optometrists to assist patients with eyecare services, glasses, and contact lenses.

The donation will allow for $7,500 in general scholarships, $7,500 in scholarships for women in welding, and $10,000 to create Quick Jobs scholarships specifically for veterans.

“To help ensure the vibrancy of a community is maintained and nurtured, Fluor is committed to supporting programs like Greenville Tech’s Quick Jobs that develop workforces by providing job training for adults who find themselves in need of quickly obtaining skills matching the needs of local business and industry,” said Cheryl Wiggins, senior manager of community and public affairs for Fluor.

“Fluor has established a culture of giving in terms of donations and volunteer hours, both of which build this community,” said Ann Wright, vice president for advancement with the Greenville Tech Foundation. “Once again, they are supporting our students as they seek job skills or find paths for changing careers. That kind of support allows our students the financial stability to secure gainful employment and provide for their families.”
