Forty-eight seniors named semifinalists in 2011 National Achievement Scholarship competition
September 29, 2010EVANSTON, IL – September 29, 2010 -Forty-eight Black Americanseniors in 32 South Carolina public schools have been named 2011semifinalists in the 47th annual National Achievement Scholarshipcompetition. They are among more than 1,600 students to achieve thishonor nationwide.
Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition forapproximately 800 scholarships worth over $2.5 million to be awardednext spring. The National Achievement Program is conducted by theNational Merit Scholarship Corporation and began in 1964 to recognizepromising black students.
Richland District Two’s Richland Northeast High School in Columbia hadthe largest number of South Carolina semifinalists with five. Two otherRichland Two schools –Blythewood High and Spring Valley High – hadthree semifinalists each, as did Dorman High School in SpartanburgDistrict Six. Four students from private schools also qualified.
About 80 percent of semifinalists are expected to fulfill additionalrequirements and advance to the finalist level. More than half of thefinalists will be named National Achievement Scholars based on theirabilities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous collegestudies.
Over 160,000 high school juniors from all parts of the United Statesentered the 20101 National Achievement Program when they took the 2009Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Semifinalists are designated within geographic regions and are thehighest-scoring program entrants in the states that make up each region.
National Achievement Scholarships for 2011 will be supported bycorporations, professional organizations, foundations and by NationalMerit’s own funds. Two types of scholarships are offered – one-timeNational Achievement $2,500 scholarships, which will be presented on aregional representation basis, and about 100 Achievement Scholarshipsthat are corporate-sponsored and may be renewable for up to four yearsof undergraduate study. Winners’ names will be announced in earlyApril.
