Foundation Announces 2013 Nonprofit Leadership Training Certificate Class

COLUMBIA, SC – August 28, 2012 – The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is pleased to announce the 2013 class of the Nonprofit Leadership Training Certificate program. The program, a partnership between the Foundation’s Carolina Academy for Nonprofits and Columbia College, is an intensive yearlong graduate-level certificate program for nonprofit leaders in South Carolina. This marks the fourth class to go through the program.

The program offers students theory, knowledge and discussions to help grow their understanding and practice of effective leadership on both a personal and professional level. Upon completion, participants receive nine graduate hours and a certificate in Organizational Change and Leadership from Columbia College. The Foundation covers tuition and costs for the Nonprofit Leadership Training Certificate program.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina’s Carolina Academy for Nonprofits leverages training and educational opportunities to meet the needs of multiple nonprofit organizations addressing poverty in South Carolina. The Foundation goes beyond grant making and provides nonprofits with tools and resources for success in different areas. This includes free daylong workshops in a variety of areas as well as two nonprofit leadership programs.

Recognizing current leadership gaps as well as fears of gaps for the future in nonprofit organizations, the Foundation added to its Carolina Academy for Nonprofits offerings two leadership development programs for nonprofit executives and senior staff. The first of these was the certificate program in 2010.

“We must provide leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to fill the leadership gaps for current leaders and to diminish fears regarding what emerging leaders are able to offer for the future,” said Katrina Spigner, senior program officer of the Foundation. “We are in the business of transformation, and we are doing it one leader at a time.”

Acceptance into the program is competitive and includes an application, essay, letters of reference, undergraduate transcripts and an interview. A committee reviewed and made final decisions. The Foundation will begin accepting applications for the next class in January 2013.
