April 8, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – April 8, 2010 – Meredith Burton, director of the Furman University Child Development Center (CDC) and also a kindergarten teacher at the center, has been named a Teacher Adviser for Scholastic Books for 2010.

Burton is among 15 advisers selected from around the country to provide information to the publisher about the types of books that families and children are interested in and about how to help children develop home libraries.

In addition to meeting with Scholastic personnel in New York City, Burton serves as a resource providing insights from the classroom. She also will help with book selections for book club sales and write reviews of children’s books.

Scholastic Corp. calls itself the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and a leader in educational technology and children’s media.

Representatives from Scholastic recently visited the Furman CDC to see how it operates and how the staff members use books and literacy activities in a preschool/kindergarten setting.

Burton, who holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and elementary education from Furman, went on to earn her master’s in reading/literacy from Furman. She has taught for 12 years and serves on the state board of the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children and on an educational advisory panel at North Greenville University.

In 2006, she conducted a seminar for Chinese English teachers in Luoyang, China, and in 2007 she won a WYFF-TV Golden Apple Award as an inspirational educator. Burton frequently shares her knowledge of early childhood literacy and social studies at state conferences.
