Furman University Selected for Green Colleges Guide

GREENVILLE, SC – May 2, 2011 – For the second consecutive year,Furman University has been recognized as one of the nation’s mostenvironmentally responsible colleges with its inclusion in the 2011edition of the Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges.

Accordingto the Princeton Review, the guide profiles 311 colleges anduniversities that have demonstrated a “notable commitment tosustainability.”  The free, comprehensive guide is produced inpartnership with the U.S. Green Building Council.

In selectinginstitutions for inclusion in the guide, a school’s sustainabilityefforts were examined in areas thought to be most important to students:(1) whether students have a campus quality of life that is both healthyand sustainable; (2) how well a school is preparing students foremployment in the green economy; and (3) how environmentally responsiblea school’s policies are.

In addition to its profile in the guide, Furmanwas one of 10 schools featured in a section called “Stories fromCampus,” which looks at how schools are creatively addressing areas suchas curriculum, transportation and student involvement. “

For proof ofFurman’s leadership in green building,” the guide said, “one need notlook further than the university’s innovative David E. Shi Center forSustainability.  The core mission of the Center is to promote the studyof sustainability both on campus and in the greater community.
