Gateway receives $500,000 check from Greenville Health Authority to support mental health services

Grant is part of “Healthy Greenville: A Bold Initiative for Greenville County’

As part of “Healthy Greenville: A Bold Initiative for Greenville County,” the Greenville Health Authority today presented a $500,000 check to Gateway in support of the non-profit organization’s efforts to improve the quality of life for adults in the Upstate living with mental illness.

“We are striving to make Greenville County the healthiest county in America,” said Phillip Liston, president of Greenville Health Authority. “Gateway’s mission to support adults with mental illness is a vital component to the overall health of our community, and we are pleased to be able to help fund their efforts through our Healthy Greenville Grant Initiatives.”

Gateway is a non-profit organization funded in part by community donations that helps adults in the Upstate living with mental illness build confidence through social interaction and its Work-Ordered Day model. The $500,000, three-year grant helped Gateway fund construction of its new, 20,000-square-foot Clubhouse, the organization’s center that serves as a hub for all of the opportunities and programs that Gateway offers, including social and vocational skills, relationship building, education, employment and housing.

The new Clubhouse, which opened in 2020, can serve up to 200 daily members. Members come to the clubhouse daily and serve various roles, such as helping to manage the kitchen, serving meals, preparing the monthly newsletter or working a job with a partner business as part of Gateway’s Transitional Employment Program, or pursuing independent employment.

“At Gateway, our success is based on our Clubhouse model, which is a place of acceptance, belonging and inclusivity to combat the isolation so often associated with mental illness,” said Randy Redlinger, Executive Director of Gateway. “Since 1984, Gateway has provided a place of hope and community for more than 1,450 members. This generous grant from the Greenville Health Authority means our new Clubhouse can continue to serve our community and continue to make a positive impact in the lives of those living with mental illness.”
