Governor’s School names Dean and Vice President for the Arts and Academics

GREENVILLE, SC – April 27, 2012 – The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Julie Allen as Dean and Vice President for the Arts and Academics.  A committee representing the SCGSAH faculty, staff and Board of Directors reviewed candidates from across the country before recommending Allen.
 
“Julie Allen is an exceptionally talented educator,” says Dr. Bruce Halverson, President of SCGSAH. “Her experience and commitment to excellence make her the perfect choice for this very important leadership role.”
 
Allen’s experience and investment in the SCGSAH community make her uniquely qualified for this role. As a former department chairperson and a founding member of the SCGSAH faculty, she understands the distinctive challenge of the school to provide outstanding quality in both academics and arts education.

Allen received a B.A. degree in History and an M.A.T. in Social Studies from the University of South Carolina. She taught for ten years in Lexington School District Five before coming to SCGSAH in 1999.Allen is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Council for the Social Studies. She has been a presenter at state and national conferences, including the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference, the National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference, the National Fall Forum for Essential Schools, and the College Board’s AP National Conference. Allen was awarded National Board Certified Teacher status in 2001 after successful completion of the year-long application process. She has worked with National Board as an assessor for other candidates and completed the renewal certification for National Board in 2010. She works with Educational Testing Services as a question leader at the national AP reading and serves on the College Board’s Development Committee for AP European History. Allen was appointed co-chair of the Development Committee in 2011.

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school located in Greenville, South Carolina, providing a unique arts and academic education to the state’s emerging artists.
