Habitat for Humanity to receive 2014 S.C. Housing Achievement Award

GREENVILLE, SC – April 23, 2014 –  The S.C. State Housing Finance and Development Authority honored Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County for its work in fostering neighborhood improvement and creating affordable housing today.

Habitat received the 2014 S.C. Housing Achievement Award on today at a luncheon in Columbia during the Affordable Housing Forum.

The South Carolina Housing Achievement Awards are presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions in the state’s affordable housing arena. Habitat for Humanity was nominated by Martin Livingston, Executive Director of the Greenville County Redevelopment Authority.
Habitat for Humanity highlights include:

The mixed income development, Abigail  Springs, which was begun in 2010.  To date, fourteen homes have been built in Abigail Springs, three are now under construction, and an additional seven homes will be built over the next two years.

Habitat for Humanity is the only organization in Greenville County providing zero-percent  home mortgages. The average mortgage payment for a Habitat home is $418 including taxes and insurance.

Habitat Greenville provides affordable homeownership opportunities for families earning 30-60 percent of the area median income.  The organization maintains a foreclosure rate of less than 4 percent and 88 percent of mortgages paid on time.

All Habitat homes are constructed to Energy Star and NAHB ISO-700 standards.
Last fiscal year, 1,541 volunteers participated with Habitat Greenville, contributing more than 19,000 hours of service.                             
In 2013, Habitat Greenville and its funding partners made a total investment of  $1.2 million in Greenville County and Habitat homeowners paid County property tax revenue of $142,974.
