Legacy Charter School Brings New Life To Former Fine Arts Center

March 21, 2011

GREENVILLE, SC – March 18, 2011 – Today, Legacy Charter School officially broke ground to launch renovations at the former Fine Arts Center campus in West Greenville. The $5-plus-million project is expected to be completed in time for the 2011-12 school year.

The old Fine Arts Center, which has been dormant since 2006, holds a special place in the hearts of many former Greenville County schoolchildren and their parents. Legacy Charter School, a free public school open to any student in Greenville County, is putting that site back to work.

Legacy Charter School currently serves students in grades K5-10 across two campuses. The Parker Campus serves grades 5-10 in the former Parker High School at 900 Woodside Ave. in the City View community. The Fuller Campus serves K5-4th grades and is in the former Fuller Normal School facility at 901 Anderson Ave. in the Sterling community.

Once renovations at the Fine Arts Center are completed, Legacy Charter School will relocate its Fuller Campus programs to the site, which is just down East Bramlett Road from the Parker Campus.

“We are so excited to be bringing new life to a facility that has enlightened so many students over the years,” said Legacy Charter Elementary School Principal Kenny George.

Legacy Charter School offers a challenging curriculum in which students can become eligible for college credit. It is also focused on fitness, with daily physical education classes and a healthy menu in the school cafeterias.

“We want to become a neighborhood school,” said William Brown, chairman of the board for Legacy Charter School. “This renovation and relocation will go a long way toward our goal of putting students in a position where they can be all they can be.”

Special guests at the groundbreaking included Senator Mike Fair, chairman of the Greenville County legislative delegation; Representative Chandra Dillard of House District 23; Greenville Mayor Knox White; and Xanthene Norris of Greenville County Council.
