Literacy SC announces 2025 board officers, highlights community volunteer opportunities

Literacy SC, central South Carolina’s leading adult literacy nonprofit, announces its 2025 board officers and invites community members to join its mission of teaching practical reading, writing, and math skills to adults.
“Literacy SC focuses on learning foundational literary skills in a safe and supportive environment,” says newly appointed Board Chair Brittany Smith who works as the assistant manager of Richland Library Sandhills. “I’ve always been an advocate for life long learning and self efficacy which is embedded in our continuous efforts. As board chair, I look forward to championing the astounding strides made by our learners, volunteers, staff and board members.”
Other 2025 board officers include:
- Nitiki Satterwhite as Vice Chair
- Dr. LeConte’ Middleton as Secretary
- Suzanne Miller as Treasurer
- Alana Reynolds as Internal Committee Chair
- Matt Steinmetz as External Committee Chair
These dedicated volunteers represent a wide range of industries from library service to education to entrepreneurship.
“I became involved with Literacy SC because I was incredibly impressed by the success of its learners,” notes Treasurer Suzanne Miller, founder of EssayFaire. “Literacy and numeracy are essential to a civil and vibrant society, and each person who becomes more literate strengthens our foundations while becoming more personally capable and engaged with the world.”
Alongside a small staff, volunteers are the backbone of Literacy SC’s three-county success. The organization offers several ways to get involved in Richland, Lexington and Aiken Counties:
- Private Tutors (2-3 hours per week)
- Board Members (4-6 hours per month)
- Remote Wellness Callers (1 hour per month)
- Literacy Link Drop Bags volunteers
- Kit Packers (quarterly)
“I am thrilled to be an officer on Literacy SC’s board,” shares External Committee Chair Matt Steinmetz, patron training and technology coordinator for Lexington County Public Library. “I was lucky enough to have teachers in high school and middle school who refused to give up on me as a reluctant learner. Not everyone is as lucky as I was, and I feel an obligation to help provide learning resources for adults who did not have the same opportunities that I did.”
From one-on-one tutoring to remote wellness calls, from board service to community outreach, Literacy SC volunteers help build a stronger South Carolina where every adult has the chance to learn.

Founded in 1968 as the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, Literacy SC has trained over 1,750 tutors and helped over 6,000 adults read well. Adults who read below a 9th grade level get over 50 hours of free private tutoring each year, plus all books through their flagship Turning Pages Adult Reading Program.
