Lowcountry Writing Project now accepting applications for spring classes

CHARLESTON, SC – October 14, 2010 – The Lowcountry Writing Project at The Citadel is now accepting applications for spring classes. The two classes slated for the 2011 spring semester are “Writing Without Words,” which focuses on visual literacy, and “21st Century Writing Tools,” which offers instruction on using blogs and wikis in the classroom.
Writing Without Words (ENGL 551) is for teachers who want to integrate audio and visual media into the classroom. Through readings, viewings, discussions, field trips, written reviews, and creation of peer-reviewed lessons, participants will become comfortable with and confident about using art, film, music, architecture, and pod-casts in the classroom. The course will be led by Junius Wright, a National Board certified teacher from Academic Magnet High School, and features a curriculum based on classroom lessons he created through his program, “The Visual Literacy Project” (www.readingart.net). Classes meet from 5-8 p.m. Thursdays from Jan. 20 to March 10 at The Citadel., with field trips on Jan.22 and Feb. 12 and 26.
21st Century Writing Tools (EDUC 587) is designed to help teachers become comfortable using wikis and blogs in the classroom setting by exploring digital writing environments and collaborative writing workspaces for students. Guided activities and assignments will give teachers intermediate technology competency to engage in integrated classroom ideas to keep up to date with today’s changing technology. Course instructor Emily Elliott is an educational technology specialist for the Charleston County School District. Classes meet on campus from 5-8 p.m. Thursdays from Jan. 20 to March 10 plus Saturdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Jan. 22, Feb. 12 and 26.
Participants earn three hours of graduate credit upon successful completion of either course. The cost of each course is $400, which includes books. Enrollment deadline is Jan. 4, 2011. Courses are open to classroom teachers in all disciplines and all grade levels, public or private schools.
