MOA Korean BBQ opens at 1333 Main Street
September 26, 2023MOA Korean BBQ celebrated the opening of their Columbia location at 1333 Main Street with a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Monday, Sept. 25. It is owner Sean Kim’s second restaurant in Columbia, his first being 929 Kitchen on Gervais Street.
MOA brings traditional Korean cuisine to the Main Street District through a grill-at-your-table experience. Kim, a native of Korea, came to the United States in 1995 and received a degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1999. After receiving his MBA in Kansas, he started running small businesses across the Southeast, which led him back to USC to participate in their culinary program.
In addition to 929 Kitchen, Kim also owns and operates MOA Charlotte.
The Executive Chef for MOA is Roy Set, who brings 35 years of experience to the new Columbia restaurant. The New York City native has worked in front of top restaurants in downtown Seoul, Korea and Manhattan. His specialty is in Korean BBQ and Japanese cuisine. MOA Columbia will be his 9th restaurant in which he has developed the menu and kitchen.
MOA Korean BBQ’s unique grill-at-your-table dining experience offers a glimpse into the rich tradition of Korean cuisine. This hands-on approach not only enhances the flavors of the food but also reflects the communal aspect of Korean dining, where sharing meals with loved ones is a cherished part of the culture.
At the heart of this experience are the ingredients themselves, which are prepared with the utmost care and precision, reflecting the depth of Korean culinary traditions. For those new to Korean dining, the use of korean chopsticks is an essential part of the experience. Unlike Western utensils, these chopsticks are often made of metal or wood, adding a distinct feel to every bite. Their thinner shape allows for more delicate handling of food, particularly during BBQ meals, where thin slices of meat are often grilled directly at the table. The proper use of chopsticks, combined with the interactive dining experience, immerses guests in a full cultural experience, making each meal at MOA a celebration of tradition and flavor.
Korean cuisine is deeply rooted in the culture’s history and social practices, where food is not just sustenance but a way to connect with others. The sharing of dishes is a fundamental element of Korean meals, with each item served in small portions designed for communal enjoyment.
At MOA, this cultural philosophy is brought to life through the collaborative BBQ experience, where friends and family come together to grill their food, creating bonds over a shared meal. The emphasis on fresh ingredients, balanced flavors, and thoughtful presentation is a testament to the importance placed on food in Korean culture. Whether it’s the smoky aromas of sizzling meats or the vibrant side dishes that accompany every meal, dining at MOA is not just about eating; it’s about experiencing a rich cultural tradition that has been passed down through generations.
