Musical titans ring in 2009 with Philharmonic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Philharmonic gives 2009 a rousing welcome with the help of musical titans Marina Lomazov and Mozart at the Koger Center on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Music Director Morihiko Nakahara continues the Master Series in his debut season after a one-month break by leading the orchestra, which played its first concert in 1964, into its 45th year.
Lomazov, the Ukrainian-born virtuoso pianist who routinely draws large crowds and is one of Columbia’s favorite guest artists, returns to the SCP in a big way. After a one-year break from performing with the orchestra, she is set to perform two big works: Mozart’s 20th Piano Concerto and, as a bonus, American composer George Gershwin’s famed Rhapsody in Blue.
Other works on the concert program include the Pulcinella Suite from Igor Stravinsky and Darius Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit, which the SCP has never performed.
Nakahara presents the popular pre-concert lecture Classical Conversations at 6:30 and 6:50 p.m. in the Koger Center Large Rehearsal Room, offering ticket holders his unique insight into the evening’s program.
