Public Safety and Prevention Lead Discussions at Laurens County Council Meeting

During the Laurens County Council meeting held Monday, April 14, 2025, several important matters were raised during the address to council segment, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve public safety, public health, and infrastructure across the county.

Chief Deputy Martin

Chief Deputy Martin spoke to council about the pressing needs of the Johnson Detention Center should a proposed general obligation bond be approved. Martin outlined necessary upgrades, including a new HVAC system, modern door systems, updated radios, and padded cells. The proposal also includes funding to support the county’s animal control services.

Cross Hill Mayor Danny Stroud

Cross Hill Mayor Danny Stroud addressed council members with a request for an increased police presence in his town. Citing a recent rise in criminal activity, Stroud urged council to consider additional resources to support public safety in the Cross Hill community.

Brandy Singleton, who manages day-to-day operations at The PlaySafe Organization and

leads its marketing and fund development efforts, informed council members that they are now eligible to apply for funding through the South Carolina Opioid Settlement. These funds could be used for opioid prevention programs aimed at reducing substance misuse and addiction in the county.

In other business, council unanimously approved on first reading a major economic development initiative known as Project Armor. The $23 million expansion involves a local company and is expected to create 24 new jobs.
