Red Trucks Take in 1,655 lbs. Pet Food and Donations for City Animal Shelter and The Animal Mission

May 24, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – May 23, 2013 – Neighbors from Shandon, surrounding Columbia neighborhoods and the greater Midlands donated 1,655 lbs. of pet food and cat litter to the City of Columbia Animal Shelter and $2,332 to The Animal Mission at the fifth annual Red Truck event on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19.

Because of the event’s success and public participation in three previous years, this year, highly visible red pickup trucks were located at three Columbia locations, including:

  • Corner of Heyward and Holly Streets (Shandon)
  • City of Columbia Animal Shelter
  • Main Street, Saturday only: Soda City Farmer’s Market and Uptown on Main

In addition to pet food, the City Shelter also received other supplies necessary to care for the animals at the shelter, including: paper towels, bleach, detergent, litter boxes, crates, trash bags, bowls and toys.

In five years, including this weekend’s event, the Red Trucks have yielded a total of 6,123 lbs. of pet food for the City of Columbia Animal Shelter. The Red Trucks will be back in Shandon and at other Columbia locations May 17 and 18, 2014.

The Red Truck event was conceived when a group of Shandon neighbors and friends decided to raise funds and solicit supplies for less fortunate animals. Originally publicized through neighborhood flyers, posters, media coverage and word of mouth, the event has grown from a single truckload, to multiple, overflowing deliveries to the shelter. It has been a labor of love, which has yielded incredibly generous donations and unimagined rewards in friendship and community spirit for its supporters.
