Richland One teacher named SC’s 2018 Outstanding Biology Teacher
May 16, 2018Dale Jacobs is passionate about learning and loves to share her passion for biology with her students. The Lower Richland High School teacher was recently named 2018 Outstanding Biology Teacher in South Carolina by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT)
Dale has been interested in science since she was 11 years old and remembers when the science “bug” bit her: while she was watching a film about careers in elementary school. “One day a segment about being a research scientist came on and that segment immediately caught my interest and that’s where my passion for science came in,” said Ms. Jacobs. “My passion for teaching came later on in life after I graduated from college. There is nothing better than teaching others about something you love.”
Every day Ms. Jacobs seeks to inspire her students by showing them real-world applications about what they’re learning in the classroom. At Lower Richland, she teaches forensic science, and biology II, as well as biology for the school’s International Baccalaureate program. For the past three years she has taught biology at the district’s Evening High School for at-risk youth.
Her favorite quote about teaching is by writer William Arthur Ward: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
Dale will be honored along with other award winners from across the country at the annual NABT conference in San Diego, California November 8-11. She also will be awarded prizes from Flinn Scientific and Carolina Biological Supply at the conference.
The NABT is an organization that represents and supports teachers, students, scientists, and allied professional organizations to enhance and improve biological literacy for everyone. Since its creation in 1938, thousands of educators have joined NABT to share experiences and expertise with colleagues from around the globe, keep up with trends and developments in the field and grow professionally.
Richland One extends its congratulations to Ms. Dale Jacobs, an exceptional teacher who inspires us all with her dedication to her students and teaching.
