Richland One to showcase magnet programs at November 19 fair

November 10, 2019

Whether it’s learning a second language, getting a head start on the skills they need for high demand jobs, or taking classes online or on a college campus, Richland One’s magnet programs offer students a wide array of unique learning experiences in traditional and non-traditional settings.

Families can learn more about the district’s magnet programs at the Richland One Magnet Fair on Tuesday, November 19 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Heyward Career and Technology Center, 3560 Lynhaven Drive.

“We believe that offering students more exciting and diverse educational choices will lead to greater opportunities as they prepare for college and careers,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. “Our magnet programs are designed to challenge students academically and appeal to their personal and career interests.”

All Richland One students, regardless of their school attendance zone, may apply to enroll in a magnet program within the district, unless the program is designated as one that is zoned for certain attendance areas. Admission is based on successful completion of the application process, which may include attending an information session and meeting qualifying criteria, in addition to completing an application.

This year, Richland One will implement a new district-wide online application for admission into magnet programs. Round One applications will open on December 1. A computerized random selection process (lottery) is used when there are more students and families interested in a particular magnet program than there are slots available.

Staff members from each of the magnet programs will be at the Magnet Fair to provide information to students and parents and answer their questions, including details about the application and selection process.
