Spartanburg Community College Dedicates
Business Training Center to L. Hoke Parris

May 18, 2012

SPARTANBURG, SC – May 18, 2012 – Spartanburg Community College (SCC) held a naming ceremony on May 16, honoring L. Hoke Parris, of Gaffney, for his leadership and continued support of the Spartanburg Community College’s (SCC) Cherokee County Campus.

“We’re here today to recognize one of our visionaries, L. Hoke Parris, a person who has dreams for this community and has worked to see them fulfilled,” said Henry Giles, SCC interim president.

Giles continued, “Congratulations, Hoke. We appreciate you as a man of character, vision and leadership with whom this campus would not exist or would certainly not be as successful.”

SCC dedicated the Cherokee County Campus’ Business Training Center to Parris for his avid support of the College and his service to Cherokee County. It was under his leadership on the Cherokee County Council that the county approved funds to support the development of the campus in 2003.

Giles, along with members of the Commission, presented Parris with a resolution from the Spartanburg County Commission for Technical and Community Education, an honorary plaque and portrait that will hang in the lobby of the L. Hoke Parris Business Training Center.

“Words cannot express how I feel today about having this building named after me,” exclaimed Poke. “I am honored, thankful and truly blessed. I love Cherokee County.”

Parris is a Cherokee County native and a veteran of the US Army. He has served his community for 24 years on the county council, where he has served as chairman for 17 years. Parris is an advocate of industry, job growth and education in Cherokee County and has served on the County’s public works committee, finance committee, judicial service committee, and the human service committee. In 2008, Parris was inducted into the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce’s Hall of Fame. He is also a Mason and an active member of the Draytonville Baptist Church, where he has served in various church offices and committees.

In Parris’ honor, the L. Hoke Parris Business Training Center will strengthen economic development in Cherokee County by providing residents access to education and job training that leads to a highly skilled workforce, as well as entrepreneurial success and business growth.
