Spartanburg Community College Receives Honors for Funds Raised for Alzheimer’s Association

SPARTANBURG, SC – February 9, 2012 – Spartanburg CommunityCollege’s (SCC) faculty and staff team – “Memoria Tenere” – was recently honoredby the Alzheimer’s Association with a special first place team award foroutstanding participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraising event heldin Spartanburg. The team raised a total of $4,610 to benefit the Alzheimer’sAssociation.

“The SCC team is an inspiring example of individuals workingtogether for a common cause,” explains Joyce Finkle, program director for theAlzheimer’s Association of South Carolina. “The Memoria Tenere team raised moremoney than any other team in the Spartanburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The fundsraised by the SCC team and the awareness they bring to the community forAlzheimer’s help so many. Thanks, Memoria Tenere for leading theway.”

“More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and that number isexpected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unlesswe can find a way to change the course of this disease,” said Nancy Garmroth,SCC’s director of financial aid and veteran affairs. Garmroth raised $3,400 forthe event, ranking first in the list of top fundraisers inSpartanburg.

“This year I walked to honor my mother, Carolyn Tate, forher caretaker role, and in memory of my father, Donald Tate, who passed away onJune 2, 2011,” explained Garmroth. “Families are devastated when a loved one hasthis disease. The financial, emotional and even physical burdens on thecaretakers and family members can be overwhelming. Anything that I can do toease these burdens for others provides satisfaction for me – and my daddy wouldbe happy and proud.”

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largestevent in raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.Since 1989, this all-age, all-ability walk has mobilized millions to join thefight against Alzheimer’s disease, raising more than $347 million for the causeacross the U.S. Events are held annually in the fall in nearly 600 communitiesnationwide. Spartanburg’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s took place on September 17,2011, with fundraising continuing until November 30 when the awards wereannounced.
 
All Walk to End Alzheimer’s donations benefit theAlzheimer’s Association, the leading voluntary health organization inAlzheimer’s care, support and research. The mission of the Alzheimer’sAssociation is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement ofresearch; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and toreduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brainhealth.
 
The SCC Memoria Tenere team members included faculty andstaff members Ellen Autenzio, Jane Bird, Bryan and Nancy Garmroth, Holly Ireson,Susan Poss, Judy Sieg, Bob Stokem and June West. The team name has significanceto its members because it was selected in remembrance of their loved ones – theLatin phrase “memoria tenere” can be translated as “to hold inmemory.”
