State Board of Education to recognize service by exceptional public school volunteers
November 13, 2010COLUMBIA – Twenty-one individuals and organizations are being recognized for their contributions to South Carolina’s public education system.
The State Board of Education will honor these volunteers at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 17 at Gibson Commons, located at 140 Gibson Commons in Lexington, SC 29072.
“Our honorees have affected the lives of hundreds of students, said State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. It’s inspirational to hear these stories, where adults have worked with students to produce positive relationships for everyone involved. The rewards are tremendous for all.
The annual Volunteer Awards are authorized by the Education Improvement Act of 1984 and are designed to honor the time, energy, talents and other resources contributed to South Carolina public schools.
The awards honor significant contributions made by four categories of
recipients: businesses, civic organizations, individuals and school improvement councils. Candidates are nominated by school districts across the state.
Criteria for selection include promoting student achievement, enhancing school-community relations, strengthening school or district resources, encouraging a positive climate and promoting teacher effectiveness.
