Support Local, Share Local — Small Actions That Make a Big Impact

We often think about supporting small businesses as something we do with our wallets—but one of the most powerful ways to support local is by simply sharing what we love. Whether it’s telling a friend about your favorite lunch spot or bringing out-of-town guests to your go-to boutique, word-of-mouth matters—and it matters a lot.
In fact, most small businesses rely heavily on loyal customers not just to return, but to spread the word. A single recommendation can lead to a new regular customer. A gift card to a favorite local shop can introduce someone new to the value of shopping local. And a thoughtful social media post or tag can boost a small business’s visibility more than you might realize.
According to Nielsen, 92% of consumers trust recommendations from friends and family over any other form of advertising. And research from BrightLocal shows that 76% of people “always” or “regularly” read online reviews when browsing for local services. Your voice—whether in person or online—has real influence.
Here in Laurens County, where community ties run deep, these everyday actions can create a powerful ripple effect that helps our local economy thrive.
Show, Don’t Just Tell
Instead of telling your child to support the community, show them how. Take them out to lunch at the same diner that sponsored their baseball team this spring. Share the story behind the business and why it matters. Let them see the connection between that team banner on the wall and the burger on their plate.
Bringing your kids, friends, or coworkers into your favorite local spots not only builds community pride—it also brings new customers through the door.
Give the Gift of Local
Think beyond big-box gift cards. When birthdays, holidays, or thank-yous roll around, choose a gift card to a local spa, coffee shop, or restaurant. Pair it with a personal note like, “I thought you’d love this place as much as I do.” It’s a meaningful way to introduce someone new to a business you love—and help it grow.
Invite, Tag, Recommend
Social media is a powerful tool for small businesses—but they need your help to make it work. When you have a great experience at a local restaurant, boutique, or salon, tag them in your post, leave a review, or simply share a photo with a quick shout-out. Those small gestures increase exposure and encourage others to check them out.
Better yet, bring a friend along. Invite someone to meet you at your favorite coffee shop or suggest a local venue for your next girls’ night out or family dinner. Those shared experiences create lasting impressions—and help businesses grow.
And what if your experience wasn’t great? One of the best things you can do is reach out privately to the business owner or manager and give them the opportunity to make it right. Small businesses care deeply about their customers, and many will go above and beyond to correct mistakes or address concerns. Posting a negative review or venting on social media without first offering a chance for resolution can be harmful—and often doesn’t reflect the full picture. A little grace and direct communication can go a long way in supporting the long-term health of the businesses we want to see succeed.
