Tax Season is Open – Avoid These Common Mistakes When Filing Your Return

February 3, 2025

The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) officially opened the 2024 Individual Income Tax filing season on January 27, 2025. While tax season can feel overwhelming, avoiding common filing mistakes can help prevent processing delays and ensure a smooth refund process.

Extended Deadline for South Carolina Filers

South Carolina taxpayers have extra time to file this year. Due to relief granted in response to Hurricane Helene, state income tax returns are not due until May 1, 2025. However, filing sooner rather than later can help avoid last-minute stress and expedite refunds.

Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Filing Your Taxes

  1. Filing a Paper Return Instead of E-Filing
While paper returns may seem straightforward, they are more prone to errors. The IRS reports that approximately 21% of paper returns contain mistakes, compared to less than 1% of electronically filed returns. E-filing software automatically checks for errors and ensures calculations are accurate, making it the best option for filing.
  2. Filing Without Your W-2 and 1099 Forms
It may be tempting to use your final paycheck stub, but doing so can lead to inaccurate reporting. Wait until you receive all necessary tax documents, including W-2s from employers and 1099s for additional income sources, to ensure accurate reporting.
  3. Entering Incorrect Information
Even when e-filing, inputting incorrect information can result in delays. Make sure to:

    • Use the exact name printed on your Social Security card.
    • Double-check your bank account number and driver’s license number for accuracy.
    • Carefully review income data before submitting your return.
    • Don’t forget to sign your return—an unsigned return will not be processed.
  4. Not Updating Your Address
If you’ve moved recently, ensure the SCDOR has your correct mailing address. Failing to update your address may cause processing delays or prevent you from receiving important notices regarding your tax return.

    • If you have a MyDORWAY account, update your address by logging in, selecting the More tab, and clicking Manage Names & Addresses.
    • If you don’t have an account, submit an SC8822I form to update your information.
  5. Entering Banking Information When You Can’t Pay in Full
If you owe taxes but can’t pay the full amount immediately, do not enter your banking information unless you plan to have the funds withdrawn on a specific date. Otherwise, SCDOR will automatically debit the amount owed on your selected payment date.

    • If you need a payment plan or wish to use another payment method, do not enter your banking details when filing.

Fraud Prevention & Refund Timelines

The SCDOR places a high priority on protecting taxpayers against fraud. While returns can be filed starting today, the agency will not begin processing returns until February 3, 2025 to allow employers time to submit W-2s by the January 31 deadline.

Taxpayers should expect processing and refund issuance to take up to eight weeks from either February 3 or the date the return is filed, whichever is later. While the extra processing time may seem inconvenient, these security measures help prevent fraud and ensure legitimate refunds reach the right taxpayers.
