Tax Season Opens January 27 for South Carolinians
January 15, 2025The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) announced that the 2024 Individual Income Tax filing season will open on January 27, 2025, aligning with the IRS’s start date. Due to the relief granted in October following Hurricane Helene, the filing deadline has been extended to May 1, 2025.
Online Filing and Direct Deposit Encouraged
South Carolinians are urged to file their taxes online, which is the fastest, most secure, and most efficient option. Last year, more than 94% of tax returns in the state were filed electronically, with 88% of refunds issued via direct deposit.
SCDOR Director Hartley Powell highlighted the benefits of online filing, stating, “Our ultimate goal is for all taxpayers to file electronically since it is the safest, most accurate way to file, and it’s the fastest way to receive refunds.”
Fraud Prevention and Processing Timeline
To combat fraud, SCDOR will begin processing returns on February 3, 2025, after employers meet the January 31 W-2 submission deadline. Taxpayers should expect processing to take up to eight weeks from February 3 or the filing date, whichever is later. The department emphasizes that this extra time is necessary to verify returns and protect refunds.
Filing Tips for a Smooth Process
- Gather All Documents: Ensure you have W-2s, 1099 forms, and prior tax return transcripts before filing.
- Wait for Official Documents: Filing with a year-end pay stub instead of a W-2 may delay your refund.
- Update Your Information: Keep your address current with both your employer and SCDOR using MyDORWAY.
Changes for the 2025 Filing Season
Taxpayers should note several updates for the 2024 tax year:
- Increased Dependent Exemption: The exemption rises to $4,790, up from $4,610.
- Reduced Top Income Tax Rate: The top marginal rate decreases to 6.2%, down from 6.4%.
- Doubled Volunteer Deduction: Qualifying volunteers can now claim $6,000, up from $3,000.
- Higher Subsistence Allowance Deduction: Eligible first responders may claim $16 per regular workday, up from $8.
