The Citadel Graduate College graduates 332 and presents awards

CHARLESTON, SC – May 7, 2012 – The Citadel Graduate College conferred degrees to 332 of its students during commencement exercises on Saturday, May 5, 2012, in McAlister Field House. 

The president of The InterTech Group, Inc., Jonathan Zucker, gave the commencement address and was presented an honorary doctorate of letters. The InterTech Group – recently listed by Forbes magazine as the 110th largest privately held company in the United States – has a portfolio that includes such diverse sectors as aerospace, real estate, manufacturing, financial services and entertainment.

“Graduation is a special occasion for our students and their families,” said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. “With many of them holding full-time jobs and managing families, they have had to work hard and make sacrifices to see this day. Their determination and leadership will take them far in the paths they choose.”

During the ceremony students were honored for outstanding leadership and academic achievements. Awards and their recipients are: Lindbergh Award – Gregory J. Ujcich The Charles Lindbergh Award is given annually to an undergraduate evening student in civil and environmental engineering for outstanding academic achievement, service to the engineering profession and to the community. The award honors Charles Lindbergh, Citadel class of 1958, who served as head of the civil engineering department from 1981 to 1993.

MBA Professor of the Year – Tim Keogh Keogh is an assistant professor in the School of Business Administration.

The MBA Outstanding Student of the Year – Michael Crosby
The award is determined by a vote of faculty members who teach in the MBA program. It is presented to a graduate who has demonstrated an exceptional record of academic achievement and principled leadership within the MBA program.

Hirshey Awards – Marissa Echenique, Anthony J. Pieretti, Jr., Chelsea Sosnowski
The Hirshey Awards are presented each spring to both graduate and cadet students exemplifying excellence in education in honor of Dr. Charles Hirshey, the head of the Department of Education from 1969 to 1979. Dr. Hirshey is a pioneer of graduate education in the Lowcountry and a founding member of what is now The Citadel Graduate College.

J. Patrick Leverett Award – Sherri Rowan
The Leverett Award is in honor of Psychology Professor Pat Leverett who served as a faculty member for 10 years and who died tragically in a plane crash in Alaska in 2005.

Aline M. Mahan Award – Artemis Flouras
The Aline M. Mahan Award is presented annually to a graduate who has demonstrated an outstanding record of scholarship, technical skill, and community service in the School Psychology program at The Citadel. This award honors Aline Mahan, who was an active and visible member of the Citadel faculty for 17 years. 

Business Evening Undergraduate Student of the Year – Frances Johnson
The award is determined by a vote of faculty members who teach in the evening undergraduate program. It is presented to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated an exceptional record of academic achievement and principled leadership within the program.

Business Evening Undergraduate Professor of the Year – Lancie Affonso The award is determined by a vote of the evening undergraduate students. It is presented to a professor who exemplifies the qualities of teaching excellence.
