Citadel cadet to compete on international level at World University Games in Korea

July 3-14

Citadel cadet, David Wilkinson, will travel to Guangzhou, Korea to compete on a global stage in the pistol and shooting events at the World University Games. The event is an international multi-sport competition organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is staged every two years in a different city around the world, representing both winter and summer competitions.

“David will represent The Citadel with proud distinction in performance and character on a global scale when he travels to Korea to compete this summer,” said Citadel pistol team coach, Will Murray, Class of 2003.  “We are excited for this opportunity for him and can’t wait to see the results he produces.”

Over the past year, Wilkinson achieved All-American status in three events including free pistol, standard pistol and air pistol. A junior from LaCrescent, Minnesota, Wilkinson is pursuing a degree in criminal justice.

Brig. Gen. Skoch to speak at Marine Corps JROTC Cyber Security Camp

As one of the fastest growing job categories, cyber security has quickly become a trending topic among some of the nation’s highest-ranking defense leaders. This will be the third year the Marine Corps JROTC has held its camp at The Citadel.

Experts and leaders on cyber security from across the country will be in attendance to speak, including Brig. Gen. Skoch.

Skoch currently serves at the National Commissioner of CyberPatriot, the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Education Program.

Skoch has more than 20 years of experience in leadership positions developing, managing and implementing communications and information systems for the United States Air Force as well as the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Within the USAF he served as Director of Mission Systems, Director of Communications Operations, and Director of Chief Information Officer Support where he aligned information technology systems with business process improvements. He has developed policies for global telephone, video, radio, voice, data and satellite systems. Before joining CyberPatriot, Skoch was a consultant in the cyber and IT industry.

Two new books from Citadel’s nationally followed historians

Professors David Preston and Kyle Sinisi from The Citadel’s Department of History release books

Preston’s book, Braddock’s Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution (Pivotal Moments in American History) is set to release on July 14 by Oxford University Press. Preston is the Westvaco Professor of National Security Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Preston’s account of Braddock’s Defeat offers a reinterpretation of Braddock’s Expedition in 1754 and 1755. On July 9, 1755, troops under the command of General Edward Braddock, commander in chief of the British Army in North America, were attacked by French and Native American forces while making their way to Fort Duquesne, a few miles from what is now Pittsburgh.

Preston’s book reveals new insights into the battle and establishes Braddock’s Defeat as a pivotal point for Indian, French, Canadian and British peoples in the eighteenth century. Preston specializes in early American and Native American history. He is the author of The Texture of Contact: European and Indian Settler Communities on the Frontiers of Iroquoia, 1667-1783and articles about New York and Pennsylvania history.

Sinisi’s book, The Last Hurrah: Sterling Price’s Missouri Expedition of 1864 (The American Crisis Series: Books on the Civil War Era) follows with a July 15 release date by Rowman and Littlefield Publishing.

It focuses on Confederate General Sterling Price and his attempt to liberate Missouri from Union occupation and guerilla warfare. Price’s invading army lacked men, horses, weapons and discipline and its success depended upon an uprising of pro-Confederate Missourians, an uprising that never occurred. The Last Hurrahis the story of Price’s invasion from its planning to its retreat.

Sinisi, a U.S. Army veteran, is a two-time recipient of the James A. Grimsley Award, The Citadel’s annual award for excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Sinisi is the co-editor of Total War Series line of books for the Rowman and Littlefield Publishing Group, and author of Sacred Debts: State Civil War Claims and American Federalism. Sinisi is also a co-editor of Warm Ashes: Issues in Southern History at the Dawn of the Twenty-First Century.

 

Sixth Annual Citadel Lady Bulldogs Football 101

Bring your eye black and game face on July 31 to the Sixth Annual Ladies Football 101 event, sponsored by The Citadel Football Association. Experience a ladies-only evening of football education, fun, food, gifts and auctions with this year’s highlights including a meet and greet with the new Citadel athletic director, Jim Senter, and a fashion show with Citadel football players modeling uniforms. The event will be held from 4:30 – 9: 30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, with proceeds benefiting a new supplemental nutrition program for football players.*

The Ladies Football 101 curriculum includes:

• 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Wine & Cheese — Tea & Cookies Reception

Hosted by The Citadel Football coaches’ wives, attendees will tour the training, locker and equipment rooms.

• 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Welcome and coaching begins

The coaching staff will discuss the basics of offensive and defensive college football. Next, see the Bulldogs build their strength as players demonstrate the equipment.

• 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Be the player

Take to the field for passing and catching practice and demonstration and create your own victory dance.

• 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Fuel up and enjoy some shopping

Relish a catered supper in the Altman Athletic Center, enjoy live and silent auctions benefitting the Bulldogs and receive your event t-shirt.

The “tuition” for Ladies Football 101 is $55 per person. Two can register for $50 each. Bring a group of three or more and register together for $45 each. All registration must be completed here. The registration deadline is Monday, July 27.

*Proceeds this year will go to a new supplemental nutrition program for football players. During spring and summer practice athletes need to consume daily more calories than mess hall meals supply. The Citadel Football Association (CFA) will begin this summer providing additional nutritious snacks and beverages in the weight room to assure that players are receiving the necessary calories for optimal athletic performance. This program is in addition to the nine weekly mess hall meals per player per week during the summer that the CFA funds.

At the end of July The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes will travel to Edinburgh, Scotland as the only American military band invited to participate in the largest military music event in the world. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is broadcast to 30 countries and approximately 100 million people annually, and it’s the largest production of its kind in the world. Charleston, South Carolina, is on the world stage along with The Citadel because the city is introduced at the beginning of each performance – and there are two dozen performances.

Part of The Citadel tradition since 1909, the Regimental Band and Pipes is composed of 80 cadet musicians and 35 pipers and drummers. They have earned an international reputation as one of the world’s premier military college bands and are the only U.S. military college band to ever be invited to the Edinburgh Tattoo. The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes are able to attend due to the generous support of donors.

 

The Citadel 2015 Intelligence and Homeland Security Enterprise Conference

In continuation of its tradition as an educational leader in the field of U.S. national security The Citadel will host the second conference on national security studies and intelligence analysis. It is sponsored by the college’s Department of Criminal Justice.

The keynote speaker is Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, U.S. Marine Corps, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Stewart formerly served as the commander of Marine Forces Cyber Security.

“The conference promises to enhance our understanding of the security challenges we face on the Southeastern coast of our country and how best to address them on the nation’s behalf,” said Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Bo Moore.

Shawn Edwards, Citadel’s Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer named among Charleston’s Forty Under 40

Shawn Edwards, Citadel’s Diversity and EEO Officer, has been selected as a 2015 Forty Under 40 winner by the Charleston Regional Business Journal, nominated by members of the Charleston community.

Edwards has been with The Citadel since October 2014 and in her short time, has implemented several new diversity initiatives for the campus. She is partnering with several departments on campus to establish a Diversity Council that will focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

She recently conducted training on implicit bias in the workplace and educated Citadel employees on individual perceptions and prejudices that influence decision making. Edwards is an active member in the community where she serves on the board of several organizations including the South Carolina Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Palmetto Warrior Connection, and the African American Leadership Council. She is a volunteer with TEDx Charleston and Ellevate Charleston. Recently, Edwards worked with South Carolina SHRM and Governor Nikki Haley to establish a human resources professional day in South Carolina.

“She is very proud of the opportunity to give back and has served as mentor for several young women in the Charleston community,” said Citadel director of human resources, Leah Schonfeld. “On top of it all, Shawn is a wife and mother to five children. The Citadel is very proud of her accomplishments and this distinguished recognition.”

A panel of judges determined who among the nominees would be named to the 2015 class. These winners will be recognized at the Charleston Regional Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 banquet.

 

The Citadel takes action to protect children as a Darkness to Light “Partner in Prevention”

The Citadel is now a designated “Partner in Prevention” for the nonprofit organization, Darkness to Light.

The college was awarded the title for its commitment to the prevention of child sexual abuse. Those with the “Partner in Prevention” designation are recognized for taking extra steps to protect children by training staff to understand the issues surrounding child sexual abuse.

The Citadel has provided Stewards of Children training to over 90% of its management, staff, and volunteers. The program is scientifically proven to help participants prevent and respond to child sexual abuse.

Darkness to Light is an international organization that leads the movement to end child sexual abuse by educating and empowering adults in education, youth serving organizations, and communities to protect children. Darkness to Light has affiliates in all 50 states and 16 international locations.
