As leaders, we should bring out the best in people.
At their best, they reach peak performance.
That should be every leader’s highest priority.
Seeing them at that level is personally rewarding.
Here are five steps to create star performers.

1. Share with them what you expect of them.
You need to remind them often what you expect.
Talk with them regularly, especially newer ones.
Explain your standards and expectations.
Help them set clear, realistic and attainable goals.
It should make them stretch to attain them, too.

2. Say good-by to poor performers.
One bad employee will run down everyone’s morale.
Warn problem children you are willing to let them go.
If they don’t improve, they leave you no choice.

3. Build trust by sharing responsibility.
Delegate to build their confidence in themselves.
You are telling them you trust them to do the work.
You want them to succeed and grow as professionals.

4. Encourage your budding stars.
They’re smart, hard workers and high achievers.
Embrace their abilities and show them the ladder.
Then get out of their way by letting them climb.

5. Admit mistakes, learn from them and fix them.
You want them to be able to learn from them, too.
They watch what you do, not what you say.

They know when you are engaged and committed.
They know if you just go through the motions.
They are always watching you and what you do.
Show them how star performers perform.
