Whitney M. Young Service Awards Announced: Tameika Isacc Devine, Terry Dozier and Abraham Riley

COLUMBIA, SC – March 7, 2008 – The Whitney M. Young Awards Banquet will be held March 25, 2008 at 6:30pm at the Brookland Baptist Banquet Center. The Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America will present the Whitney M. Young Service Awards to honor City Councilwoman, Tameika Isaac Devine; former USC and professional basketball standout, Terry Dozier and local Scoutmaster Abraham Riley.
Dr. Whitney M. Young was a national advocate for those often overlooked. He believed strongly in the value of scouting programs for all youth. Because of his commitment, the Scoutreach program of the local Boy Scouts of America recognizes individuals who have given outstanding service to disadvantaged youth through the honoring of the national Whitney M. Young Service Award.
Scoutreach uses the Scouting program to redirect a child’s energies away from negative, self-imposed limitations toward a more positive, healthy attitude through bonding with a caring adult Scouting mentor. Collaboration with inner-city schools, churches and neighborhood-based organizations has been instrumental in the formation of new Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops in hard-to-serve areas.
The Indian Waters Council, founded in 1916, is the Boy Scouts of America council serving following central South Carolina counties: Bamberg, Calhoun, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, and Saluda. The Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. Friends of Scouting is the Council’s annual fundraising campaign in which 98.8% of funds generated stay in the local Council service area.
