‘Body Lines’ Now Open at Coffee Underground: Eating Disorders Exhibit Features a Retrospective Look at the “Perfect Female Form”

March 5, 2013

GREENVILLE, SC – March 5, 2013 – Now in its 3rd year, the annual, Body Lines: A Retrospective Look at the ‘Perfect’ Female Form, exhibit is officially open to the public at Coffee Underground for the month of March. A reception will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 6:30-8:00p.m. and will offer an opportunity for the public to connect with professionals who work toward treating and reducing present issues with body image and eating disorders. A film, ED 101 will also be aired during the reception.

Presented by an Upstate nonprofit, ED Aware, ‘Body Lines’ features a visual timeline highlighting the changing standards of beauty in regard to body type within the last century. Through a photo montage of female beauty icons, the visual will parallel how society’s shifting expectations have led to destructive body images and eating disorders among women. Due to its impact last year, Body Lines will also be featured at 3 universities across the Upstate later this year.

Nilly Barr, a local Greenville psychotherapist and co-founder of ED Aware, noted, Today, eating disorders affect more than 25 million Americans; sadly, more people die from eating disorders than any other mental illness. We must work together as an entire community to heal the pain of eating disorders-and stop this deadly pursuit toward the intangible ‘perfect’ body.
