In the 1990s, several Motley Rice attorneys, including co-founders Ron Motley and Joe Rice, took on the tobacco industry. Armed with evidence acquired from whistleblowers, individual smokers’ cases and tobacco liability class actions, the attorneys led the campaign of 26 states’ attorneys general to recoup state healthcare funds and demand marketing restrictions from cigarette manufacturers. The effort resulted in significant restrictions on cigarette marketing to children and culminated in the $246 billion Master Settlement Agreement, the largest civil settlement in U.S. history. Motley Rice attorneys continue to litigate tobacco cases and support tobacco-free educational programs and opportunities such as the “Century of Cigarettes” exhibit.

Motley Rice attorneys who held integral roles in the historic tobacco litigation, as well as attorneys currently active in the Engle tobacco cases in Florida, can be made available to take questions from the media.

“A Century of Cigarettes” exhibit is sponsored by the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center, the National Institute of Health and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. For more information, visit www.tobaccotimeline.org.
