The Old Santee Canal Park celebrates a beautiful South Carolina natural resource and emphasizes the historical significance of the Santee Canal. Opened in 1800, the Santee Canal was America’s first summit canal, providing a direct outlet to Charleston Harbor from the Santee and Cooper rivers.

Today, more than four miles of boardwalks and trails provide an up-close view of the park’s natural beauty and wildlife, and canoe rentals are available for the exploration of Biggin Creek and the southern terminus of the Santee Canal. The Interpretive Center houses exhibits on the cultural and natural history of the area, and the nearby Stony Landing House and the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center offer unique historical perspectives of one of the greatest economic development stories in South Carolina history.
