1×1 Design’s Asheley Scott St. John recognized as a 2019 Woman of Influence

September 3, 2019

The team at 1×1 Design announced that Asheley Scott St. John, the architecture firm’s president and owner, has been honored among Columbia Regional Business Report’s 2019 Women of Influence.

St. John is one of the twenty-five women, in professions ranging from architecture and higher education to law and real estate, who were selected as 2019 Women of Influence by the Business Report. The honorees are local Midlands women who are setting the pace in their careers as well as working diligently in the Midlands to better the community and embody a philanthropical and entrepreneurial spirit.

Honoree profiles were published in the Aug. 12 issue of Columbia Regional Business Report and were celebrated at a luncheon for more than 400 guests on Aug. 22. Each year, women are nominated by readers and honorees are selected by a panel of judges.

Throughout her career, St. John has led and collaborated on a variety of projects, ranging from small residential renovations to large mixed-use international developments. She has a passion for communicating with clients and working together to bring an intangible idea to paper and, eventually, to reality.

She was honored earlier in 2019 by the national American Institute of Architects organization as an AIA Young Architects Award recipient, one of just 22 in the nation.

St. John is an alumna of Clemson University (B.A., Design) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (M.Arch). In addition to being a registered architect in South Carolina, St. John holds architectural registration in nine additional states.

Outside of the office, St. John is very involved in the community. She is the recent past president of the Board of Trustees for the Clemson Architectural Foundation, and she is past president of both the Greater Columbia Section of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Contemporaries of the Columbia Museum of Art. She also has served in leadership roles with Heathwood Hall Episcopal School as an alumni representative and with the Columbia Development Corporation as a board member. She is a member of the Columbia Chamber’s Leadership Columbia Class of 2009 and was honored among The State Newspaper’s “Top 20 Under 40.”

A woman-owned firm with DBE certification, 1×1 Design launched in June 2011 and celebrated its eighth anniversary in June 2019. The company is comprised of six full-time staff, including an architect, an interior designer, three intern architects and one project coordinator.

1×1 Design works with commercial clients across South Carolina and throughout the Southeast for new construction as well as renovations, masterplans, maintenance and upgrades in a variety of industry sectors, including corporate, office and industrial; government; retail, restaurant/hospitality and entertainment; nonprofit; faith/religion, education and healthcare; transportation; and multifamily housing, as well as selected single-family residential projects.

Anna Gray Fender, IIDA, LEED AP, collaborates with St. John to lead the firm. She joined the 1×1 team in 2012 and incorporates her interior design expertise into all aspects of project design and management for the firm as its senior interior designer.

“Our firm is exceptionally proud of Asheley’s recognition as a Women of Influence. As her colleague, I am grateful for the poise she exhibits as a professional as well as a community leader,” Fender said. “As a firm, we are impacted by her vision, leadership, and perspective.”

Recently, 1×1 Design was recognized with two design awards by the Columbia chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Columbia). The interior and exterior renovations at The Bakery at BullStreet in Columbia, S.C., received a Citation Award in Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse/Renovation; and the interior renovations of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia were recognized with a Divine Detail Award. Both projects also garnered Preservation Awards from Historic Columbia.
