20 Marion County dogs caught in flooding evacuated to Charleston

October 19, 2016

Charleston Animal Society is helping to evacuate 20 dogs caught in the flooding that’s engulfed the Pee Dee region of South Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The dogs from the Marion County Animal Shelter are due to arrive at Charleston Animal Society in the early afternoon on Wednesday.

“We are fortunate to have the ability to help the animals in Marion County in their time of need,” said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore. “We know that these animals are helpless against the flooding and it’s good to know that we can find them new homes.”

Charleston Animal Society personnel have gone to shelters in Georgetown, Horry and Chesterfield Counties to bring dogs to safety in the Lowcountry. Charleston Animal Society also assisted with a major animal transport to Ohio and offered medical assistance in advance of the animal evacuations.

You will have an opportunity to adopt one of these rescued animals this weekend, as Charleston Animal Society sponsors the “Clear the Shelter” program and event in conjunction with News 2 (NBC). All adoption fees are waived throughout the weekend at Charleston Animal Society as part of “Clear the Shelter” and there are no hidden fees. (Charleston Animal Society is located at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston).

“If you can’t adopt, we ask that you consider a donation to help us go rescue even more animals in the flood-prone areas of South Carolina,” said Elmore.
