2022 Moms’ Run resumes in-person 5K at new location

January 16, 2022

After two years of virtual races, the 19th annual Moms’ Run + Family Fun Day will return for an in-person event at its new location. The 5K run/walk benefiting Postpartum Support Charleston will be Saturday, May 7 at Philip Simmons High School.

This event – held each year on Mother’s Day weekend – is the largest fundraising event for Postpartum Support Charleston. Proceeds from the event further the organization’s work offering resources, support groups and peer support for Charleston area moms struggling with maternal mental illness, including postpartum depression, anxiety and OCD.

Register for the 19th annual Moms’ Run at www.ppdsupport.org/events/momsrun2022. The 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and registration is $30 for adults; $40 for adults with a stroller; and $25 for children. New this year is a Kids Dash for ages 3 to 10. It will take place at 8 a.m. Registration for the Kids Dash is $20 and includes a finisher medal.

This year’s event also includes the Family Fun Day with entertainment and activities for children as well as family friendly exhibitors and vendors. Family Fun Day is included with the race registration.

All events will take place at Philip Simmons High School, 3080 River Village Drive in Charleston. For many years, the Moms’ Run was at MUSC Health Stadium on Daniel Island, but when the stadium was torn down, the race needed a new home.

Philip Simmons High – located just off Clements Ferry Road – graciously offered to host the Moms’ Run + Family Fun Day.

The annual Moms’ Run is both a celebration of motherhood and an opportunity to raise awareness about a common struggle facing so many moms after the birth of a baby. An estimated 1 in 5 new moms will suffer from a maternal mental illness. In the Charleston area, that means about 2,000 moms every year will be impacted.

Postpartum Support Charleston offers a variety of opportunities for moms to connect – from weekly walks in the park to art therapy and gardening – and get support from Mom Mentors.

In fall 2020, the organization launched a new program called Beyond Delivery, which provides moms with basic necessities and support as they head home from the hospital with their infant. Any mom can request a care package that includes a homemade lasagna, diapers, wipes and diaper cream along with information on maternal mental health and resources provided by Postpartum Support Charleston.

“We have grown our efforts considerably over the last year in an effort to reach even more moms in our community,” said Elaine DeaKyne, executive director. “More moms are participating in our programs, requesting care packages through Beyond Delivery and reaching out for help. The Moms’ Run is a chance for the community at large to celebrate our moms and to support the important work of caring for moms right here in the Charleston area.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 19th annual Moms’ Run. Businesses can also apply to be part of Family Fun Day at no charge. To request a sponsorship packet or for questions, email [email protected].
