5th Annual Jazz Crawl for Charity brings ‘The Big Easy’s’ vibrant spirit to Charleston

The vibrant cultures of two of Southeastern America’s most heritage-rich cities, New Orleans and Charleston, will collide for the 5th annual Jazz Crawl for Charity on Sunday, April 14th. “The Big Easy’s” famous second-line parades will return to Charleston’s historic streets for a memorable celebration benefiting a great cause! The mobile block party will once again sing, shimmy, and shake its way up King Street to close out the monthly Second Sunday on King.
A Bayou-inspired, carnival-themed party from 1-4 pm at the Gibbes Museum Garden will kick the event off. Revelers will indulge in a $5 New Orleans food and drink menu, live music, dance performances, group costume contests, a royal crowning contest, and plenty of carnival swag to kick off what’s sure to be a memorable 5th edition of the parade.
The parade will lead participants up Meeting Street to Marion Square for an interactive Community Drum Circle. Percussion instruments will be provided. From Marion Square, a police escort will lead parade participants to Prohibition on King Street for the official after party.
A portion of event proceeds and 100% of direct donations will go to the Jazz Crawl Second-Line Fund, which donates instruments to local music students in need and supports cultural preservation through performances and demonstrations. The Jazz Crawl is also a vehicle to spark dialogue about the amazing perseverance and need for preservation of the West African cultures shared between the Lowcountry’s Gullah/Geechee and New Orleans’ Congo Square communities.
“The Jazz Crawl is becoming more than an unforgettable New Orleans- themed party in Charleston,” says Rick Tringali, who founded the event in 2015 as a tribute to his Aunt Patty. “The downtown spectacle is becoming a platform for people to learn more about our country’s
artistic and cultural roots through a uniquely interactive experience.”
