Casting Adventures: The South Carolina 4-H Fishing Project

The South Carolina 4-H Fishing Project invites youth aged 5-18 to embark on a journey into the world of fishing. The Upstate 4-H Fishing Project is designed to be an independent venture for youth, fostering a sense of responsibility and curiosity. Participants will gain valuable insights into various aspects of fishing, including:

• Fishing Gear, Baits, and Lures: Experiment with a range of fishing equipment, baits, and lures to understand the nuances of attracting and catching fish.

Participants are encouraged to actively engage in the following activities throughout the fishing season, which runs from April 2nd to September 30th:

• Fishing Excursions: Explore local fishing spots, putting your newfound skills to the test, and documenting your experiences.
• Complete a 4-H Fishing Log: Keep a record of your fishing adventures, tracking your catches and reflecting on your progress.
• Participate in Local Fishing Days/Camps/Events (Optional): Join organized fishing events in your community to share your passion with fellow participants.
• Fishing Project Field Trips: Stay tuned for exciting field trips to hatcheries across the state, offering unique insights into fish breeding and conservation efforts.

Project Completion:

To wrap up the project, participants are required to submit their completed record books to their local extension office by October 1, 2024. The record books will be evaluated in age-appropriate categories – Cloverbud (5-8 years), Junior (9-13 years), and Senior (14-18 years). Recognition awaits the top record books in each category, providing a sense of accomplishment and motivation for continued exploration in the world of fishing.
