As the Season of Giving Arrives, Your Spare Change Can Warm a Heart
November 18, 2025With the holiday season upon us and colder weather in the forecast, the Laurens Commission of Public Works (CPW) is reemphasizing its ongoing Community Change program—a simple, powerful way for residents to support neighbors in need.
The program allows participants to make a big impact through small change. Each month, a customer’s water, electric, sewer, and natural gas utility bill is rounded up to the next dollar. That monthly donation, which can be as little as a penny or up to 99 cents, is pooled and given directly to local charities. These organizations provide warm meals, emergency utility assistance, and other critical services—support that becomes especially important during the winter months.
“The holidays are a time for reflection and generosity, but it’s also when the needs in our community can feel most acute,” said John Young, General Manager of Laurens CPW. “Our Community Change program is a year-round testament to the compassion of Laurens, but its impact is profoundly felt during this season. That spare change from rounding up your bill can literally help provide warmth and comfort to a family. It’s an effortless way to extend the spirit of giving throughout the winter.”
The beauty of the program is its accessibility. For an average of just about six dollars per year, any household can become a steady source of support for local outreach efforts.
And the impact is already being felt. Last year, Laurens CPW customers contributed $2,985 through Community Change—and CPW matched that amount, doubling the support for local charities that assist families across the county.
As the community prepares for gatherings with family and friends, CPW encourages residents to remember the power they have to make a difference right at home. There is no cost to sign up, and the benefits to Laurens families are immeasurable.
