United Way of Greenville County awarded AARP Community Challenge grant to expand transportation access for older adults

June 25, 2026

No one should have to choose between their health and their ability to get to a doctor’s appointment. A new AARP Community Challenge grant awarded to United Way of Greenville County will expand its local Ride United program, helping adults age 50 and older access free transportation to medical appointments throughout Greenville County.

The grant addresses one of the most significant barriers facing older adults: reliable, cost-effective transportation. Through United Way’s Ride United, eligible participants can access free rides to medical appointments, helping them maintain their health, independence and quality of life.

Transportation remains a challenge across Greenville County, particularly for older adults who no longer drive, or have limited access to a reliable vehicle or public transit. The AARP Community Challenge grant will allow United Way to connect more residents with the care they need while supporting safer, more accessible transportation options throughout the community.

“Reliable transportation should never stand between someone and the healthcare they need,” said Meghan Barp, president and CEO of United Way of Greenville County. “This generous investment from AARP will help older adults get to essential medical appointments and remain connected to the services that support their health and well-being. We are deeply appreciative of AARP’s investment in this important expansion of Ride United in Greenville County.”

Ride United is a transportation access initiative that leverages United Way’s 211 resource line and Lyft’s rideshare platform to provide free transportation for essential needs. Since launching locally in 2025, the program has provided more than 500 rides to help people overcome transportation barriers to healthcare, employment, housing and other critical services.

With support from the AARP Community Challenge grant, United Way will dedicate 300 roundtrip rides for adults age 50 and older who need transportation to medical appointments but lack adequate alternatives.

The AARP Community Challenge is a grant program to make tangible improvements in communities that jump-start long-term change. Celebrating its 10th year, the AARP Community Challenge has doubled its investment, providing $8.3 million to 750 grantees nationwide. The grant program is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for people of all ages.
