“A Conversation with Nigel Redden” moderated by Mayor John Tecklenburg as Spoleto Festival USA marks director Nigel Redden’s final season

On Wednesday, June 2, 2021 Mayor John J. Tecklenburg, Honorary Chairman of Charleston Sister Cities International will moderate “A Conversation with Nigel Redden”. Celebrating Nigel Redden’s significant leadership and cultural impact on Charleston as he concludes his final season as General Director of Spoleto Festival USA, this invitational event will be held at the College of Charleston’s historic Randolph Hall. A private reception will follow at The President’s House at the College of Charleston.

College of Charleston President Andrew T. Hsu and Charleston Sister Cities International will introduce the guests and program. Event sponsors include Gramling Brothers Real Estate and Development, Inc.; Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP; and the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast, South Carolina Chapter.

Nigel Redden, since 1995, has served as the General Director of Spoleto Festival USA, a 17-day performing arts festival founded in Charleston in 1977, inspired by the Spoleto, Italy Festival Dei Due Mondi. Spoleto Festival USA presents leading artists in classical and popular music, opera, jazz, dance, and theater from around the globe attracting audiences nationally.

“A Conversation with Nigel Redden” intersects three of Charleston Sister Cities International’s global Sister City partners, Spoleto, Italy; Doha, Qatar; and Panama City, Panama. It is inspired by The Qatar Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum’s “Majlis: Cultures in Dialogue” exhibition and the Qatar-United States of America 2021 Year of Culture Memorandum of Understanding and Partnership.

A presentation of companion orchestral-themed paintings by CSCI International Resident Artist, and noted Disney Director George Scribner will be gifted, via Charleston Sister Cities International, one to Nigel Redden for Spoleto Festival USA. The other painting will be gifted to Mayor Pro Tempore of Spoleto, Italy, Tiziana Tombesi in honor of the two festivals that inspired the Sister Cities partnership between Charleston, South Carolina and Spoleto Italy.

The 45th season of the celebrated annual performing arts festival runs from May 28 through June 13, 2021.
