A Conversation with Tom McNally and Miranda Bennett, Thomas Cooper Library Renovation

In mid January, the University of South Carolina students unveiled an innovative study and collaborative workspace on Level 4 of the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina. Several forces are at work here. As the student population has grown over the past decade, there is a need for more study space in the library. And, as more of the volumes in the library have been digitized, there is less need to have stacks and stacks of books. And, students are increasingly demanding more flexible space and spaces where they can meet in teams.

The renovation, which began during Thanksgiving break in 2019, was completed before students and faculty returned to campus in January to minimize disruption. The furniture is from local company McWaters.
