ADA: Know Your Rights – Free Public Workshop

August 20, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – Greenville CAN is offering a free public workshop on August 20 to help individuals with disabilities, parents, and caregivers learn more about their rights protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act.  The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion.  It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.  ADA protects the rights of individuals of all disabilities including physical, intellectual, developmental, psychological, hearing, vision, and more.  Although ADA was passed 25 years ago, many of its provisions have not been fully implemented which results in missed opportunities for individuals with disabilities according to Greenville CAN’s Lead Facilitator Mike Teachey.  “We want to empower individuals with disabilities, parents, and caregivers with knowledge of their civil rights under ADA so they can advocate for themselves and others,” says Teachey.

Participants will:

  • Learn basic disability rights that are protected by ADA.
  • Identify common barriers to physical access that result from ADA non-compliance.
  • Identify common barriers to program access that result from ADA non-compliance.
  • Learn how to report ADA issues at the local and Federal level.

ADA:  Know Your Rights is set for August 20 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm at the Shriners Hospital located at 950 Faris Road in Greenville.  The workshop is free; however, registration is required.  For more information visit www.greenvillecan.org/summerevents or contact Mike Teachey at [email protected] or 864-420-1366.
