Advertisement of Vacancies on Various Boards and Commissions The City of Columbia is accepting applications to fill several vacancies on the following boards and commissions.

Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC)

Seeking to fill three (3) vacancies.

The purpose of BPAC is to advise the Mayor and City Council Members, the City of Columbia transportation planning staff; community organizations; and partners on bicycling and pedestrian issues facing the city; to work toward development of bicycle/pedestrian master plan; to represent community and constituent interests in transportation planning decisions; and to provide feedback to staff on projects relating to walking and bicycling. Applicant must reside/work within City Limits. Term – 2 years.

Board of Zoning Appeals

Seeking to fill two (2) vacancies

Hear and decide appeals when someone claims that the Zoning Administrator had made an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination in enforcing the zoning ordinance; The Board of Zoning Appeals may grant special exceptions for uses that the City Council believes are generally permissible but require review and approval on a case-by-case basis to ensure secondary impacts do not adversely impact traffic; vehicle and pedestrian safety; adjoining property in terms of noise, lights, fumes, and air flow; the aesthetic character of the environs; and the orientation and spacing of buildings ; and  may grant a variance to certain provisions of the Zoning Ordinance where a literal enforcement of the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance would result in unnecessary hardship, provided that the spirit of the Zoning Ordinance shall be observed, public safety and welfare secured, and substantial justice done. Term – 3 years.

Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission

Seeking to fill two (2) vacancies.

The purpose of this commission is to protect, enhance and promote the City of Columbia’s natural resources and visual beauty. They oversee the development of a master plan for the beautification of the City of Columbia and its implementation. Term – 2 years.

Citizens Advisory Council for the Columbia Police Department (CPD)

Seeking to fill nine (9) vacancies.

This council will meet quarterly to review police actions and determinations of complaints received by the police department. Term – 2 years. 

Design/ Development Review Commission (DDRC)

Seeking to fill three (3) vacancies.

Applicant must have experience as Real Estate Broker/ Developer and two applicants is a general appointment. The purpose of the Design/Development Review Commission (DDRC) is to review and approve work proposed within the City’s historic districts, urban design areas, and upon designated landmarks. Term – 3 years.

Planning Commission (PC)

Seeking to fill three (3) vacancies

The purpose of this commission is to develop and maintain a continuing planning program which will benefit City of Columbia residents; to provide a mutual forum to identify, discuss, study and address local development issues and opportunities; to foster, develop and review policies, plans and priorities in order to insure orderly growth, development, conservation and preservation; to furnish technical assistance to city government and its agents; and to review and coordinate federal, state and local programs that have an impact on the city.  The Commission also advises City Council on annexations, zoning changes and approves subdivision plats/large development plans.

Term – 3 years.
