Affordable Housing Coalition of SC Presents Inaugural Member of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards

May 9, 2012

COLUMBIA, SC – May 9, 2012 – The Affordable Housing Coalition of South Carolina presented its inaugural Member of the Year Award and Lifetime Achievement Award at the Palmetto Affordable Housing Forum held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in April.

The Member of the Year Award was presented to Charlie Warth, Executive Director of the Allen Temple Community Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) located in Greenville.  Under his direction, Allen Temple CEDC has completed five projects since 2007, creating family rental houses in the Greenville area.  Allen Temple CEDC also provides training and support in many other areas of life to enable tenants to be independent and success.

According to Jim Childress of Genesis Homes in Greenville, “Charlie is an excellent example of an urban pioneer.  He and his wife purchased and reside in one of the first new homes constructed in Greenville’s Haynie-Sirrine community in twenty-five years.  Because of his leadership and wiliness to take a risk more new construction is planned for the area.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was present to Charles F. Gentry, Jr., owner of Palmetto Architectural Group also located in Greenville.  Palmetto Architectural Group has been in existence for over forty years and has been involved in a wide variety of architectural projects.  However, the firm is one of the most productive architectural groups involved in affordable housing development in South Carolina.  During his career Charles Gentry has designed and completed thousands of single family and multi-family housing units that exhibit exceptional design and livability.

According to Kevin Connelly of Connelly Builders and Developers, and immediate past president of the Affordable Housing Coalition of South Carolina, “Charles Gentry considers it a special challenge to take the limited funding available for affordable housing and create developments that transform neighborhoods in a positive way.”

The Affordable Housing Coalition of South Carolina is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the creation and preservation of affordable/workforce housing in South Carolina.  Members represent all aspects of the affordable/workforce housing industry in the state.
